A New Trump Bill Is Making Big Countries Nervous. India Is Watching Closely

A new move from the US is creating unease across global markets.

Former US President Donald Trump has backed a proposed law that could seriously impact countries still trading with Russia. The details are sharp. And the message is even sharper.

India and China are very much part of the conversation.

What Is This Bill About

The proposed law is called the “Sanctioning of Russia Act 2025.”

Its main goal is simple. Cut off Russia’s revenue streams. Force an end to the Ukraine war. That’s the pitch.

But the way it plans to do that has raised eyebrows.

The bill targets countries that continue to buy Russian oil, gas, or uranium. And the penalty is heavy.

A Tariff Threat That Got Attention

After meeting Trump, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham spoke about the bill.

He said the legislation would give the US president unprecedented powers. Under the proposal, the US could impose tariffs of up to 500% on imports from countries buying Russian energy.

Trump Invites Colombian President to White House After Sharp Accusations

US President Donald Trump surprised many on Wednesday.

Just days after making strong remarks against Colombia and its president, Trump changed his tone. According to a Reuters report, Trump said he had a friendly phone call with Colombian President Gustavo Petro and has now invited him to the White House.

The shift came quickly. And it caught attention.

Trump Calls the Phone Talk “Warm”

Trump shared details of the conversation on his social media account X (formerly Twitter).

He wrote that it was an honour to speak with President Petro. Trump said the two discussed the drug situation and other disagreements between the two countries. He also said he liked the tone of the call.

Trump added that he is looking forward to meeting Petro soon. He confirmed that the meeting will now take place at the White House.

A Big Change From Recent Remarks

This softer approach stands out because of what Trump had said earlier.

Only a few days ago, Trump had described Colombia as “very sick”. He also accused President Petro of being linked to cocaine production and selling drugs into the United States.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Trump said Petro would not be able to continue like this for long. When asked if the US could intervene, Trump replied that he would be “okay with it”.

Those comments had raised tensions.

Later on Wednesday, President Petro addressed thousands of supporters in Bogota.

Meesho Loses ₹40,000 Crore in a Month, Hit Lower – Two reasons are driving this fall

Meesho shares are in trouble. Again.

For the second straight trading day, the stock hit the lower circuit. Investors are clearly nervous. In less than a month after listing, massive value has already been wiped out.

From its recent peak, the stock is now down more than 35%. Market value worth over ₹40,000 crore has vanished.

Two reasons are driving this fall.

What Happened Today

On the BSE, Meesho shares were locked at a 5% lower circuit at ₹164.55.

Selling pressure stayed strong through the session. There were hardly any buyers. This comes just a day after the stock had already fallen sharply.

One reason was already known. Today, another negative trigger came in.

Reason 1: Lock-In Period Ends

A day earlier, the stock cracked because the one-month lock-in period ended for a chunk of shares.

According to Nuvama Alternative & Quantitative Research, around 10.99 crore shares of Meesho became free to trade. That is roughly 2% of the company’s outstanding equity.

At the January 6 closing price of ₹182.30, these shares were worth about ₹2,003 crore.

Just to be clear, lock-in expiry does not mean shares will definitely be sold. It only means holders are now allowed to sell. But markets usually react first and ask questions later.

Reason 2: Senior Executive Resigns

Today’s fall had a fresh trigger.

Meesho informed the exchanges that its General Manager (Business) and senior management executive Megha Agrawal has resigned. This news added to the nervousness.

Leadership exits, especially soon after listing, rarely go down well with investors. The timing made things worse.

A Quick Look at the IPO Journey

Meesho’s ₹5,421 crore IPO had priced shares at ₹111.

The stock listed at a strong 46% premium. Optimism was high. Within days, the stock rallied hard and touched a record high of ₹254.65 on December 18.

But the ride didn’t last.

Before that rally even settled, the stock had already slipped to ₹153.95 on December 12, marking its post-listing low. Volatility has been extreme from day one.

What Analysts Are Saying

Bonanza research analyst Abhinav Tiwari says that operationally, Meesho has made solid improvements over the last few years.

Logistics efficiency has improved a lot. Cost per order came down from ₹55 in FY23 to ₹46 in FY25. This was driven by Meesho building its own logistics platform, Valmo, and improving delivery density.

There’s more.

Cash-on-delivery orders have fallen sharply. From nearly 90% earlier, they dropped to 61% in the first half of FY26. That helped reduce failed deliveries and costs.

Valmo is also expanding fast in smaller cities. And all this happened without heavy subsidies. That reduced operating risk and strengthened cash flows. Profitability doesn’t look too far, at least on paper.

Then Why Is the Stock Falling So Hard?

Despite these operational positives, the stock has been under pressure.

According to Abhinav, today’s fall is mainly due to lock-in expiry, which increases potential supply in the market. On top of that, Meesho’s valuation is still high compared to other consumer internet and retail peers.

That combination often leads to profit booking. Especially in a weak or cautious market.

The Big Picture

Meesho’s business story hasn’t collapsed overnight. But stock markets don’t wait.

Lock-in expiry. A senior resignation. High valuation. All of it came together at the wrong time.

For now, sentiment is weak. Investors are watching closely to see if stability returns, or if more pain is left.

HSBC Sees More Upside in UPL – Brokerage is positive on the stock

UPL shares are back in focus. This time because of HSBC.

The brokerage is positive on the stock and sees further upside from current levels. HSBC has raised its target price on UPL Ltd to ₹925 per share. Earlier, the target was ₹850.

At the new target, the stock offers around 15% upside from the last closing price. HSBC has maintained a “Buy” rating.

What’s Driving the Positive View

According to the analyst, UPL’s subsidiary Advanta plays a key role here.

Advanta is seen as a long-term value creator. It has a strong delivery model and steady execution. HSBC believes this business can continue to support growth and value creation for the parent company.

This is not just a short-term story.

Possible Listing of Advanta Could Unlock Value

HSBC also referred to media reports suggesting that UPL is considering listing Advanta in the capital markets.

If that happens, it could be a big positive. Value could get unlocked. The parent company may also use the opportunity to reduce debt.

Advanta’s numbers support the optimism.

Over the last five years, Advanta has delivered around 18% CAGR in revenue and nearly 23% CAGR in EBITDA. Compared to many other seed companies in India and globally, Advanta’s performance stands out.

Back in November 2025, UPL had guided for EBITDA growth of 12% to 16%. This was higher than its earlier estimate of 10% to 14%.

For FY26, the company has maintained its revenue growth guidance at 4% to 8%. That signals confidence, even in a challenging global environment for agrochemicals.

How the Stock Is Trading

On January 8, UPL shares traded mostly flat.

On the BSE, the stock touched a high of around ₹810.40, about 1% above the previous close. It also slipped to a low of ₹799.25 during the session.

UPL’s market capitalisation is close to ₹68,000 crore. The face value of the share is ₹2.

Despite recent consolidation, the stock has delivered strong returns. Over the past one year, UPL shares are up nearly 50%. In the last three months, the price has risen around 20%.

Copper Prices Are Up 43% in a Year. Not Everyone Is Comfortable

Copper prices are moving fast. Faster than most people expected.

In the last one year alone, prices are up around 43%. That kind of move doesn’t happen often. Especially when you look back. Since 2012, copper prices had gone up roughly 55% in total. Now almost the same jump happened in just one year.

Naturally, the market is reacting.

Miners Are Enjoying the Rally

For copper producers, this is good news. Higher prices mean better realizations. Margins improve. Cash flows look stronger.

That’s why mining stocks are running.

Hindustan Copper is the obvious name here. The stock has already jumped more than 50% in a single month. Such sharp moves don’t go unnoticed. Traders and investors both are watching closely.

But this is only half the picture.

Higher Prices Also Create Pressure

Copper is not a niche metal. It’s used everywhere. Across industries.

When prices rise slowly, companies manage. When prices jump fast, things get uncomfortable. Costs go up. Planning becomes harder. Passing on prices works, but only to a point.

Some sectors will feel this more than others.

Wires and Cables Companies Feel It First

Wires and cables makers are among the biggest copper consumers. There’s no way around it.

Companies like Polycab India, Finolex Cables, KEI Industries and Havells India depend heavily on copper. During Q3FY26, international copper prices have already moved up close to 17%.

That adds pressure.

Managements usually say the same thing. Costs are passed on to distributors and customers within a few weeks. Sometimes a month. That helps protect margins.

There’s another side to it though.

When prices rise sharply, distributors often stock more inventory. They want to avoid paying higher prices later. This can support volumes in the short term. At least for a while.

Now the focus shifts to Q3FY26 earnings calls. That’s where clarity should come.

Consumer Durables Are Also Under Watch

After wires and cables, consumer durables is the next big area.

Copper goes into air conditioners. Fans. Pumps. A lot of everyday products. So rising prices don’t stay hidden for long.

Companies like Voltas, Blue Star and Crompton Greaves Consumer Electricals are likely to stay in focus as Q3 results approach.

In fact, during the Q2FY26 earnings call, Crompton Greaves had already flagged margin pressure due to higher commodity costs. That tells you what companies are dealing with.

Inventory planning could also get tricky if prices stay high.

Industrial Components and Winding Wires

Copper is critical for transformers, motors and winding wires. There’s no substitute here.

For Precision Wires India, copper makes up nearly 80% of total raw material cost. That’s a big exposure. Companies like Bhagyanagar Industries, which make copper foils, pipes, bus bars and auto components, are also directly impacted.

Right now, most firms are passing costs to customers. But the real test is volumes. And margins. That picture will become clearer only after Q3 numbers.

Other Sectors That Could Feel the Heat

Copper price pressure doesn’t stop here.

Solar panel makers use a lot of copper.So do auto companies, OEMs, and battery manufacturers.

According to a JPMorgan report, pressure on the supply side is increasing. In Chile, workers at Capstone Copper’s Mantoverde mine are on strike. In Indonesia, issues have come up at the Grasberg mine.
