Often we see big countries talking about taking over other places. But this time, it is about Greenland. Denmark’s Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, has given a very strong reply to US President Donald Trump. Trump has been saying again and again that the US “needs” Greenland. He says it is for “security reasons.” But the PM of Denmark has rejected this completely.
She called Trump’s words “unacceptable.” She told a Danish broadcaster that we should take the American president seriously when he says such things. Both Denmark and Greenland have already said “No” many times. They will not sell or give the island to the United States.
What if the US uses force?
The most shocking part is about NATO. A reporter asked Frederiksen what will happen if the US uses force against another NATO member. Her answer was very direct. She said, “If the US attacks another NATO country, everything stops.” This is a big warning. She also said that all of Europe is together on this. They all believe that borders must be respected no matter what.
Trump is not stopping though. In an interview with ‘The Atlantic’, he said the US “absolutely” needs Greenland. He also talked about Venezuela. He thinks Greenland is very important for national security. He claimed that Russian and Chinese ships are everywhere near the island. According to Trump, Denmark cannot handle this situation alone, so the US must take it.
Rising Tensions between Allies
The tension started getting worse since January 2025. When Trump became president again, he showed a lot of interest in Greenland. He even said he might use “military or economic pressure” to get what he wants. This is very strange because Denmark is a close ally of the US.
To make things more serious, Trump recently appointed Jeff Landry as a special envoy to Greenland. Frederiksen is not happy with this. She issued a statement saying the US has no right to take over Greenland. She asked Washington to stop giving threats to their friends and the people of Greenland.
Why Greenland is so important?
Greenland is a very strategic place. It has many minerals and it is in a very important location. But it is an autonomous territory of Denmark. People living there have their own rights. You cannot just buy a country or an island like a piece of land anymore.
This situation is becoming like a big problem between Europe and America. Frederiksen is clear that Europe will support Denmark. If Trump tries to use power, the whole NATO system might break. It is a very professional mess created by these remarks.
